How to deal with a fast-rejected first proof
Your first design proof was rejected within 24 hours — how to diagnose the root cause (brief, brand, substrate) and re-brief the vendor effectively without losing 2 weeks of timeline.
Why a fast rejection actually helps
A proof rejected in 24 hours is a gift — it means the misalignment was caught before time, money and a strike-off were committed. Slow rejections (5+ days, after multiple iterations) are 10x more expensive. The trap is treating fast rejection as a vendor failure rather than a brief failure. About 80% of fast rejections are brief failures.
3-question diagnostic
1. Was the brief complete? Did it include Pantone codes, GSM, exact dimensions, print method, brand guidelines reference, recipient context? Brief gaps are the #1 cause. 2. Was the brand alignment explicit? A logo file isn t a brand guideline — the vendor needs your brand book or at minimum colour, clearance, minimum size rules. 3. Was the substrate right? Some designs cannot be reproduced on certain substrates (fine lines on heavy canvas, gradient on uncoated paper). The right vendor will flag this — wrong vendor won t.
How to re-brief in 30 minutes
Don t re-send the same brief with more emphasis — restructure it. Use a 4-block template: (1) Business context — what this merch is for, audience, event date. (2) Hard specs — Pantone, GSM, dimensions, print method, MOQ. (3) Brand reference — link to brand book + 2-3 visual references of approved past work. (4) Out-of-scope — what we explicitly don t want (helps the vendor avoid wrong assumptions). Re-brief within 24h to keep momentum.
