What FSC certifies
FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) is the leading certification for paper, wood, bamboo, cork and other forest-derived materials. Three label types: FSC 100% (all virgin material from FSC-certified forests), FSC Mix (combination of FSC-certified, recycled and controlled wood — minimum 70% FSC), FSC Recycled (100% recycled content, post-consumer ≥85%). Chain-of-custody traces material from forest to finished product. Banned: wood from illegal logging, conversion of forest to plantation, high conservation value forest destruction, GMO trees, hazardous chemicals.
Common merch applications
Notebooks (paper interior, cardboard cover), pencils, wooden USB sticks, bamboo bottle lids, cork yoga mats, gift boxes, hangtags. FSC-certified printer (chain-of-custody) required to print FSC mark on the finished product. Print inks, glues, varnishes must be compatible; off-list components void the claim. PEFC is an alternative certification covering similar scope; some buyers accept both.

FAQ
FSC vs PEFC?
Both cover sustainable forestry. FSC tends stricter on conversion + high-conservation-value forest. PEFC has wider European smallholder coverage. Choose per buyer requirement.
Cost?
License + audit 1500-4000 EUR / facility / year. TC per shipment 30-80 EUR.
Printer compliance?
To print FSC mark on finished product, the printer must hold FSC chain-of-custody certification (separate from material certification).
Recycled content?
FSC Recycled requires ≥85% post-consumer recycled, ≤15% pre-consumer. Lower thresholds fall under FSC Mix.
Bamboo?
Bamboo is fast-growing but if processed by viscose route becomes a chemical-pulping process; certified bamboo viscose available via FSC + OEKO-TEX combination.
