GOTS organic cotton: deep dive
What GOTS actually certifies, what it doesn't, and how Poland buyers should read the label.
GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) is the most rigorous textile certification in widespread use. It covers two things: the organic origin of the fibre and the social and environmental performance of every processing step from spinning to packaging. A GOTS-certified T-shirt sold in Poland Warszawa has met the standard at every stage; a 'made with organic cotton' shirt has not.
What GOTS does cover: minimum 70% organic fibre (Grade 2) or 95% (Grade 1), prohibited chemicals list, wastewater treatment requirements, social criteria (no child labour, freedom of association, decent wages), full traceability with audit trail. What GOTS doesn't cover: carbon emissions, water consumption beyond wastewater, end-of-life recyclability. So GOTS is necessary but not sufficient for a fully sustainable garment.
For Poland buyers, request the GOTS certificate number and verify on the GOTS public database. The certificate is supplier-specific, batch-specific, and the audit trail goes back to the farm. Is GOTS better than OEKO-TEX 100?
Different scope. OEKO-TEX certifies chemical safety on the final product. GOTS certifies the whole supply chain plus social criteria. Use both for premium Poland orders.
Can I see the certificate?
Yes — request the GOTS number and verify online. Any GOTS-certified supplier in Poland should provide instantly. If they can't, walk away.
Why the price premium?
Organic farming yields less per hectare, processing standards are stricter, audit costs are real. The 8-15% premium will continue to shrink as production scales.
Is GOTS recognised in Poland?
Yes — GOTS is internationally recognised including by EU public-sector tenders. Some Poland public buyers explicitly require it.
What about printing?
GOTS-approved water-based inks are widely available. Avoid plastisol prints on GOTS cotton — they contradict the standard.
