Why ISO 45001 matters for Poland merch supply chains and how to verify supplier claims.
ISO 45001 is the international standard for occupational health and safety management systems. For merch supply chains, this matters because textile and printing operations have real safety risks: chemical exposure in dyehouses, machinery hazards in cut-and-sew operations, repetitive strain in finishing. A supplier certified to ISO 45001 has documented controls in place and audited management commitment to worker safety. For Poland buyers, this should be a baseline expectation.
What ISO 45001 requires: hazard identification, risk assessment, control hierarchy (eliminate > substitute > engineering > admin > PPE), worker consultation, emergency planning, incident investigation, continual improvement. Certification involves an external audit every three years with annual surveillance. Costs the supplier €5,000-25,000 to obtain and maintain — small for any serious operation in Warszawa or Poland.
When we onboard suppliers for Poland merch orders, ISO 45001 is one of seven safety/social checks alongside Sedex SMETA, BSCI, GOTS-social, GRS-social, and our own factory visit. Suppliers without ISO 45001 can still pass if SMETA 4-pillar is current. The VAT 23% treatment is unchanged but procurement teams in Poland increasingly want this in the tender response. Is ISO 45001 mandatory?
No — it's voluntary. But it's increasingly required in EU public-sector tenders and many Poland corporate procurement processes.
Difference vs OHSAS 18001?
ISO 45001 replaced OHSAS 18001 in 2018. OHSAS-only certificates are no longer recognised. Verify the standard number on the certificate.
How often is the audit?
Initial certification audit, then annual surveillance audits, then re-certification every three years. Falsified certificates do exist — verify with the certification body.
Cost for the supplier?
€5,000-25,000 depending on facility size. Once certified, the cost-per-year drops substantially. Most serious suppliers in Poland carry it.
Does it cover worker mental health?
Yes — the 2018 revision expanded scope to psychological safety. Audits now include workplace stress and harassment controls.
